Wordless Wednesday (Mostly)

Alex is practicing his magic spells like Harry Potter.

We did see some nice fat snowflakes with yesterdays storm but the sleet was the only thing that stuck. We were sad that we didn't get to play in snow like everybody else.

The boys and daddy "reading" and I Spy book. I have no idea why daddy is wearing mouse ears.....

Russia talk

The boys know they were born in Russia and lived in a baby house until Mama and Daddy came to get them and bring them home from Texas. A few times I've tried to throw in a few more details about growing in a woman's tummy, etc but most of that doesn't seem to stick or at least they don't talk about it. See, we plan to always be open and honest with the boys about where they were born and how they came to be part of our family. We never wanted them to "find out" one day that they had been adopted and be surprised and hurt that it was hidden from them. So, occasionally Russia comes up out of the blue. The boys will say something about being born there, and Daddy was born in New York and Mama was born in Texas. I have even actually seen Zachary play with a baby doll and say that he lived in Russia in a baby house. He even named the baby Igor (which was Zachary's birth name).

This morning on the way to school Zachary started talking about Russia. At first he just mentioned that he and Alex were born there. Then he said that he slept in a baby bed and that he didn't like the dark because there were monsters there. He said something about a teacher (I think he was talking about a care-giver but we've never called them a teacher?) but I can't remember what. What really got to me was that he said that he cried in his baby bed because Mama and Daddy didn't come and get him. Then he asked me where we were? This is a new part of the "talk". Zachary has never mentioned crying or asked a question like that. I told him that we were here in Texas getting all of the paperwork ready and making his room ready for when we were told we could go get him and that we got him as soon as we could. What else could I say? He didn't seem bothered by that answer. I just wonder where it came from. We have pictures of Alex crying (he cried at some point during about 99 percent of our visits with him) and tell him that he must have been sad or scared of Mama and Daddy but we have said nothing like that to Zachary. He took to us right away and other than bed time he didn't cry with us. Is this a memory of Zachary's or just made up talk? He was only 16 months old when he came home - such a baby.

Not to be outdone, Alex also said that he was scared in Russia (I think he meant when we came to see him) and that he had wanted to stay there. Again, even though we did tell him that he must have been scared of us we never said that maybe he wanted to stay in Russia or not come home with us. He was 24 months when he came home.

So today has ended up being all about Russia. Sometimes when it comes up once in a day then it keeps popping up. We sat at the computer together and looked at pictures from our two trips to adopt the boys. They did actually kinda "get" the fact that babies grow in tummy's (although they never questioned why they grew in someone else's tummy or who she was). Both boys have put a stuffed puppy under their shirt and said it was growing in there. (I did say that only girls can grow babies in there but hey, they're only 3 & 4!) Zachary said that a tummy with a baby inside was big like a hot air balloon. I have no idea where he got that!

It seems like I really need to get on the ball about making the boys each a life book. I have wanted to do one since they got home but am finding it hard to start since it should start with their birth and not just with us coming to get them. It needs to be in kid-speak and include pictures (they love looking at pictures of themselves as "babies") and I'll laminate it so they can keep it in their rooms to look at whenever they want. This won't replace talking about it but it will be good for them. I think I'll have to put this at the top of my to-do list.

Zachary the "schnitzel boy"

Backstory: There is a German restaurant in town that we like to go to from time to time. On the weekends they have live music and when the boys are done eating they like to dance on the tiny dance floor. We've even bought a CD of the man that usually plays there and sometimes Zachary will ask for the "schnitzel music". (schnitzel = yummy German pork dish) Twice this week Zachary has been playing with his blocks and told me that he's made an acordian and he's the schnitzel boy. He can even sing some songs.
I think you can understand most of what he's singing but if not he is singing a real song. "No beer today, no beer today. You can't buy beer on a Sunday." Of course he's singing it to me so he's saying that Mama can't buy beer on a Sunday. Silly boy!

Menu Plan Monday

This is going to be a short week because hubby heads out of town on Wednesday morning. The boys and I usually eat easy things like sandwiches, pancakes, and chicken nuggets when he's not around. Yesterday I made really yummy pretzels and a few turned out really big and fat so we're slicing those open for lunch today. Tonight is a leftover meal that didn't get cooked on Friday.

Monday - lunch is a turkey sandwich on pretzel bread, dinner is Cranberry Chicken Margarita (254 calories) with rice and green beans

Tuesday - Nacho chicken (541 calories) with German fried potatoes and corn

This weekend the boys and I will head to my parents while hubby is gone and I really want to make these wonderful looking S'more Cupcakes! I know, I know, I'm supposed to be on a diet!

Pretzel making

Tonight I decided to try my hand at pretzel making. A few months ago I stumbled on a yummy looking recipe for Laura's Amazing Soft Pretzels and for some reason today seemed like a good day to try them out. Chris always orders a big pretzel when we go eat at our favorite German restaurant so I knew he'd be in. Laura has really great instructions and pictures so I easily figured out how to twist my pretzel. My only problem was that my first two baking sheets came out HUGE! I mean big heavy pretzels that you can barely see the holes because the cooked so big. So even though the recipe says to use a fist sized ball of dough for each I went a little smaller with the next two sheets and they look great. From the moment the warm water hit the yeast the whole house smelled wonderful!

Here are my big fat pretzels. I really might weigh one of the jumbos - they are that huge.

These are the pretty ones and they're all covered in butter and salt.

I sure hope they freeze well because we'll never eat all these! I've already promised to bring a few up to my parents house when the boys and I go to visit next weekend. I made 11 fat ones and 11 normal ones so I think if I did them all the right way it would have made 2 1/2 to 3 dozen total. They sure were good though.

Family Day

Yesterday was a great day! Chris has been working alot lately (or it seems like it to me) and worked again over the weekend so we were all happy that he was off yesterday. We spent the whole day together as a family and had a blast. The first place we went was to the lake near our home. It doesn't really have a beach area so it's mostly for boating which is why we haven't been before. It does have a huge dam though so we went to check out the view and take a walk. First we checked out the lake from the bottom of the dam. We think we need to get some fishing poles and come back here.

Then we checked it out from the top of the dam. The water was really blue and beautiful. There were several people walking, some with dogs. You could tell that some people come here regularly. There was a sign that said the dam was .8 miles from gate to gate and we walked across and back so we got a nice little walk in.

As a surprise for the boys we had packed them a picnic lunch and just had to stop at a little sub shop to get something for Chris and me. Then we headed to the park by the river and had a picnic outside. I'm sure the boys thought that picnics were meant to be indoors since we've been doing that lately at home! Another bonus was that this picnic area also had another "troll" bridge that crossed over to a playground - jackpot!

Finally we headed back home for a much needed nap! The fun didn't stop there though. After naptime we all watched a movie together with all the sleeping bags and blankets out....what else, Harry Potter....and ate popcorn and ice cream (not together).

After all that togetherness yesterday I was surprised when Chris called today asking if the boys and I wanted to meet him for lunch. Me, not have to cook? You bet we went to lunch!
